Ho, ho, home in front of the telly, but what to watch?
There are so many bad Christmas movies and sometimes we need a bit of help deciding. Well, here is our families list; Watch and enjoy:
The Muppet Christmas Carol
When the muppets took on Charles Dickens I wonder if anyone knew just how great this was going to be. With Michael Caine as Ebeneezer and Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit we are talking about an all star cast. Miss Piggy is sadly reduced to a cameo as Mrs Cratchit, and Mr Fozzywig is not as fully rounded a character as we might have hoped for but Gonzo and Rizzo shine brightly in this muppet movie.
Will Ferrel and Zooey Deschanel in a warm hearted comedy that doesn’t make you want to vomit. Very funny gags aplenty. Love the singing and the Central Park Rangers are the most ominous Xmas villans I have seen in a movie in a long time.
Its a Wonderful Life
Well, if you don’t like this you are probably related to the Grinch. Jimmy Stewart in Bedford Falls, fighting for his ideals, his home, his family, his sanity and his life. Of course it is a christmas movie so we know he will win, but the manner of his victory is truly wonderful.
An animation featuring a modern British take on Santa. Voiced by James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton this is the kids christmas cartoon that refuses to be lazy. Everything is very well thought out and beautifully drawn.
A Disney movie that gets it right. Great story, good twists and some terrific songs. The cold never bothered me anyway.
The Wizard of Oz
A Christmas tradition for many households around the world.
Another TV tradition. Just relax and enjoy the hand-drawn artwork. “We’re floating in the air…”
the 1951 version staring Alistair Sim is in my opinion the definitive Christmas Carol and definitely the spiritual parent of the muppet version.
This british take on smaltz is saccharine sweet but has a great script and top performances lurking beneath the syrup.
Largely improvised comedy and much of it unintentional from the cast of under 12 year olds. Not to be confused with the poor quality sequels.
The Life of Brian
He is not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy. Perhaps the funniest movie ever made. Why wouldn’t you want to watch this at Christmas?
